Virtual & Out of Town Patients

Pelvic challenges are often not openly discussed, and many healthcare providers are unaware of pelvic floor physical therapy or how it differs from traditional PT. With some therapists lacking experience or mentorship, progress can be slower. As a result, pelvic floor physical therapy remains a rare specialty that may be hard to find in your area.

What is Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy?

The muscles in your pelvis control bowel, bladder, and sexual function, staying active to keep you dry day and night. Trained pelvic floor physical therapists assess and treat the muscles, joints, nerves, and fascia in this region to improve strength, coordination, and reduce pain. With your written and verbal consent, your therapist may recommend a rectal or vaginal exam to assess internal structures. They’ll also address any contributing issues in the rest of your body. Pelvic floor therapy is one-on-one in a private room, where your concerns are heard and addressed.

How is a pelvic physical therapist different from other providers?

Pelvic floor physical therapists hold a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree and have advanced postgraduate training in the muscles, nerves, connective tissue, fascia, ligaments, and joints of the pelvis, hips, abdomen, and back. They are also skilled in performing detailed internal evaluations of the pelvic floor muscles. These therapists are educated in the complex interactions between the pelvic floor and the body's stabilizing system, as well as the digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems.

"Working with Lauren dramatically improved my c-section and general postpartum recovery. She even helped me with other aches and pains, and has a really wide span of knowledge for the practical recovery questions. I never heard a dismissive “that’s normal” to anything I said, and she consistently followed up on any remark I made, no matter how small."

"Dr Lauren is absolutely amazing! She helped me so much during pregnancy and helped prepare for delivery with second child. Seeing her postpartum has helped with so many things I’ve had going on. I wish I would have had her with my first pregnancy/postpartum. I can’t recommend her enough to anyone looking for a pelvic floor therapist for any reason and tell everyone I know about her!"
